From 23 to 27 September 2024, the South Asia Hydromet Forum (SAHF) hosted a training on Forecast Interpretation and Verification for participants from Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting in India.
The five-day training covered a wide range of topics–from developing Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models to utilizing satellite data for enhanced forecasting. Participants engaged in hands-on sessions to interpret complex weather models and apply verification techniques to ensure prediction accuracy.
A highlight of the event was the visit to Arunika, a cutting-edge high-performance computing system at NCMRWF, which is part of India’s National Supercomputing Mission and is among the most advanced systems dedicated to meteorological research in the region. SAHF, supported by the World Bank through CARE Component 1 and implemented by RIMES, aims to strengthen regional forecasting capabilities, helping National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) transform climate data into life-saving information for resilient communities across.
